Segment 1     Famous Quotations

“Because I’m thinking in a broader way, I feel like I am able to make better decisions.”   ~ Takafumi Horie

“If your thinking is sloppy, your business will be sloppy. If you are disorganized, your business will be disorganized. If you are greedy, your employees will be greedy, giving you less and less of themselves and always asking for more.” ~ Michael Gerber, author of: The E Myth

Segment 2     THiNKing Outside the Box

What ignites the creativity in you? Last month The New York Times published an article titled: When Truisms Are True.

“Recent advances in understanding what psychologists call ‘embodied cognition’ indicate a surprisingly direct link between mind and body. It turns out that people draw on their bodily experiences in constructing their social reality. Studies show, for example, that someone holding a warm cup of coffee tends to perceive a stranger as having a ‘warmer’ personality. Likewise when holding something heavy, people see things as more serious and important — more weighty.”

The study further explores how our creativity is stifled if we tend to stay in our comfort zone, or our “box”.

Today we discuss this study and include our own suggestions on how to THiNK outside the box.  Here are few:

  • Ask a child for advice.
  • Study another religion.
  • Read a book outside your normal genre.
  • Learn something new about technology.
  • Travel a different route home.

Segment 3    Heart Topic: Mini Memoir- Your life in 6 words

Oprah writes a section titled: “What I Know For Sure”, each month in O Magazine.  Recently, she wrote about Larry Smith, editor of Smith Magazine and his idea that has become known as: The Six-Word Memoir.

She shares that in November 2006, inspired by Ernest Hemingway’s legendary shortest of short stories, Smith asked his readers to describe their lives in 6 words.  The “contest” only lasted a month, but some 6 years later the stories keep coming in and to date over a half a million ‘mini-memoirs’ have been received by Smith.

Inspiration is everywhere, even in 6 words.  Here are a few O Magazine received:

“Abandoned at 5, learning to thrive.”

“Every 20 years I reinvent myself”

“Zen gardener, can you dig it?”

“Every problem has a creative solution.”

“Stage IV cancer made me live.”

Here is Oprah’s: “Seeking the fullest expression of self.”

(We also share our Six-Word Story, but you’ll have to listen in to hear!)

In addition, we honor the memory of Dr. David Foster, (CLICK HERE to see an awesome tribute to David – ’8 mins:59 secs’) who recently passed away.  David was innovative, passionate and a friend to all.  We believe his life in 6 Words would be: “We’re God Simple, Not Church Complicated”, referring to: The Gathering, a church that he and his wife, Paula started. (CLICK HERE to see David Foster’s Memorial Service ’1hr. 36 mins’)  David’s most popular book:

Our question this week is: You, in six words? CLICK HERE to post your mini-memoir. Scroll to the bottom of the page, where you’ll see LEAVE A REPLY white box.

Until next week, Peace!

  1. Unhappy, unmotivated & Hopeless
    in this box.

  2. Pam:
Thank you for your honesty. Sometimes in life our box gets really small and we feel confined to a life of discontent. We want you to know life does not have to be that way forever. As we move through the pain, the grief and the hurt – the box gets a little bigger. With each new day our box becomes less and less, until one day we find ourselves outside the box altogether.

We want to encourage you to move through the pain. Those who have, know we cannot go around it, under it or over it. We have to go right through the middle of it to overcome! In your time – you will. You can do anything you set your mind to.

Then your 6 Word Story will be: Happy, Motivated & Hopeful, no box.

    Peace,
    Connie & Sheila

  3. Life’s good. God is good. Onward!

  4. Sher Powers:
Congratulations, you just wrote your 6 Word Story, and it describes you perfectly! Thanks so much for SHERING.
    Onward!

  5. Another great episode! I totally agree that every is creative, they simply might not realize what they are creative at.

p.s. I am standing as I type this and I feel more confident as I type :)

All kidding aside – thinking outside the box is key – tough sometimes but key.

  6. Shelia Butler: you are too funny and creative too. You sound more confident, it must be because you are standing :)

Are you still thinking of your 6 Word Story? Gonna share?
    Peace,

    just 4 words:

    “Onward, through the fog!”

I’ll think on it some more.

  8. That’s great Karin. The fog rolls in sometimes, but it doesn’t have to stay forever!
Hope you are having a wonderful week.

Oh, that was our motto when I lived in Eureka because it was foggy half the year. It rained the other half . You learn to do things regardless of weather or other things that get in they way.

Hey, where’s the next podcast? i understand taking a break for a certain co-host’s birthday(s) celebration, but really, where’s the podcast?

  10. Hey Karin,
Thank you for asking about our podcast. We appreciate it…more than you know!

We will be back with a new show, hopefully this coming Monday.

April was an extremely busy month for us and we had to postpone the podcast for a bit. We had to prepare for a 2 hour presentation for our REIN group, (we were the featured speaker in April), and we had to prepare for a 7 hour / all day class we taught and Connie’s book release party was in April too. So, all in all, we were covered up! :)

But we love podcasting and “spending time” with everyone, so we are looking forward to a new show!

Again, thank you so much for asking!

    Peace,
    Connie and Sheila
